Sock Puppets

A while back, well a long while back, Kasen and I were sitting in the ER and of course he was getting a little antsy, as was I.  A lady came up to us and handed Kasen a little bag.  Inside was about 6 coloring pages stapled together, a baggie of used crayons and a handmade teddy bear... He still has that teddy bear to this day.  It was the best thing ever!  Kept him busy for just a little while, and I sane.

Since then, I was inspired to do something similar.  I have always had a passion for kids and it breaks my heart the time that some kids have to spend in the hospital.  I have been waiting for an idea to hit me and just stick.  I thing I may have found it.. You ready??.......

Sock Puppets!!!

Yes, you heard right.. SOCK PUPPETS!  These are timeless treasures that we used to enjoy as kids ourselves.  Just imagine, all different fun colors of socks, yarn and buttons!  I would like to do this long term.  Work on some for about 2 1/2 months and deliver the 3rd.  If anyone is interested in helping, donating supplies or the help needed to make them... you are more than welcome!  Details about that to come at a later date.

   So excited about this!

"And The Lightning Strikes"

If you know me, then you know that I absolutely love weather!  Specifically, lightning storms!  Last night I got to take a few pictures, for the first time, of lightning with my shiny new toy.  It is hard to get a good shot of lightning as you don’t know when it is going to strike.  I may have taken around 100 pictures just to get the few decent ones… but it was so worth it.  Another thing I love is when you are sitting outside waiting for the storm and watching the lightning, it will be completely still and then all of the sudden the wind before the storm will come.  Oh man, I just LOVE that part of the storms aso.

Here are a few of the snap shots I got… (Some may be a little blurry here and there.. The wind was nuts!)

There have been times where lightning has come a little too close for comfort… Here are a a couple little fun facts about lightning…
  • Lightning bolts are only about the size of a quarter to half dollar around.  The reason it looks to big is the brightness of the light around it.
  • The temperature of lightning is about 15,000 to 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit… The suns, 9,000!
  • Around the earth there are about 100 lightning strikes per second.
  • Lightning also occurs on Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and Uranus.
  • The fear of lightning is known as keraunophobia.  The fear of thunderstorms is brontophobia.
  • You can, in fact, be struck by lightning in your home.  The electricity from the strike can go through the electrical stuff in your home before hitting ground.  This is why they say not to use cordless phones or any kind of electrical equipment.  Also, taking a shower, doing dishes and washing clothes are not advised.
  • Lightning is not confirmed to thunder storms… Also in volcanic eruptions, intense forest fires, surface nuclear detonations, heavy snowstorms and in large hurricanes.

Anywho, I just thought that I would share a little bit of my love for weather with ya!!

The Place We Call "Work".

So a lot of us work full time, 8-5, jobs or other full time jobs at a different shift.  If not, then you either work part time every day or sporadically throughout the week.  And some are in the process of finding jobs or stay at home moms.  This blog is geared more towards those that go in and work about 8 hrs a day, and even some more.

The workplace is a very interesting place.  We spend the better part of our day here at work.  Fellow employees get close to you and you make lifelong friends at the workplace.  They know details about your life such as spouses, boyfriends or girlfriends, kids, family and even your illness’ at times.  I used to be the one to want to share all about my life and what I was or wasn’t going through.  Sure, I tell my coworkers now about details here and there, but if they knew my whole life story, they would be sure to wonder how the hell it was that I came out somewhat normal.  The point of that is, don’t tell your coworkers your whole life story.  There are times when situations will come up that some of it will come up… but no need to just spurt it out.  Keep them guessing, it’s always more fun that way anyway.

Like I said above, there will be times when details of your life will come out… and that is ok.  I started at where I am now a little over a year ago, and after only being here for about 4 months is when all the head stuff flared up real bad.  Many doctors’ appointments and much time missed at work.  I felt so bad for missing so much but everyone was more than understanding about it.  People that I didn’t know knew about the situation would come in and ask how things were going.  As I have mentioned before, a lot of people don’t see daily headaches and migraines as a problem for someone… but these people got it.  I am convinced that these are genuine people.  Not because of just that instance, but there have been a lot that fellow co-workers that have been through in the past year, and I don’t think I have ever seen another company come together like this one has to support them in their time of need… with whatever happened or is going on.

Now, the thing I love about the work place is the need to have fun every once in a while.  Whether people are hiding around the corner to scare someone, putting about a hundred rubber bands on stuff in an office, planking, gathering together to cut up for just a bit when the power goes out, being able to have a joke or two or just gathering for a baby shower.  All of those are things that make the work place more fun!  Don’t get me wrong… There is a time for play and a time for work, but both of those just make it all the more special.

This is "Planking"!  SOPT!

There are going to be days that just all around suck.  The people you work with piss you off for no good reason, you feel overworked and underpaid (which in most cases isn’t the case at all), you want to ring the neck of the next person that slams the door on a headache day (that may just be me) and sometimes even debate having a jack and coke on your lunch break.  It’s a little amusing to me only because it seems that after that sucky day it just all comes together and you’re ok again.  You love your job more than ever and just in an oddly cheery mood.

You get close to the people you see on a daily basis.  You want to know how their kids are doing, when they are going to have kids and ask questions about their family.  There is the Christmas, or Holiday, party that you can get together, have a few drinks and talk to fellow employees you don’t get the chance to at work.  We just recently had our first family picnic here at work… it was a success in my book.  We got to see each other families and most importantly… people in normal “street” clothes, ha-ha.  We had a mini water balloon fight with the kidos, obstacle races, good food and just all around fun.  Although it was a little hot that day, it really didn’t seem to matter.  There are other non work functions that your coworkers may attend as well, for instance baby showers, weddings, birthdays or just a night out.

The place you work at may be a lot different than mine, but I know that no matter where you work there will always be one thing that should remain, you are HAPPY!  I have been happy at each place I worked before… Horse Track, Daycare, Nail Salon, Plasma Center and the Fingerprinting.  There just came a time where I needed to find a place that I can grow with and be a part of something better.  A company based on service and taking care of their customers is a great fit for me.  I hope that a lot of you find your fit and enjoy it all you can; after all, we only live 1 lifetime.

The dreaded allowance... or is it?

Kasen and I went to the CVS the other night and he had been holding on to this dollar for a while now, so he brought is wallet and was determined to buy something with HIS money.  He was looking at all the pool gear and toys and I had to let him know that all that was well over $1.  I took him to the $1 section and showed him what he could get... not many options there (I wanted so bad to get him the goggles too)!  Wouldn't ya know as soon as we walked out of the store he said, and I quote, "Mom, can you give me more dollars next time, please?"  I then saw OPPORTUNITY!

Money Money Money... Moneeey!

We had already had the talk about picking up ALL his toys each night before bed time since he got this new bed.  We got home and I told him that for every night he cleans his room, by himself, he will earn $1, and that if he saves some of that money he could buy him something bigger the next time.  He was on board!  That was 4 nights ago and you better believe that his room as been clean every night since... and without saying he couldn't do it alone!

My thought is... this is genius!  $1 is not a whole lot to us, but it sure is to him, a 4 year old!  Heck, he still loves the N64 as if it were an X Box!  He is learning many things by us doing this now.  Responsibility, saving money and spending it wisely.  And, hopefully he will stop thinking we grow our own money out back.
I wish!

I remember babysitting my little sister just about every Thursday and Saturday night.  May not have gotten cold hard cash most times, but when my Mom came home with the Dr. Martin sandals I wanted oh so bad that year or when she gave money for the mall with my friends.. that's where it came in, I knew they appreciated it.

Now, I don't plan to keep it at just $7/week.  As he gets a little older, he can start helping with a lot of other things as well.  He will get a "raise" the more responsibility he takes on.

That's about all I got for today!
